The Perfect Baby
If you were able to pick out every gene for your babies’ genes, would you? There has been a lot of controversy about this idea of parents “shopping” for their children’s genes before they are even born. You can pick out their eye color, hair color, how tall they will be, and to ensure they are not born with a mental disability. By limiting all of these factors all of our kids are going to start to look like the people our parents wanted themselves to be like. We are all just going to start looking the same once our parents start pick the best looks. I feel like we are going to lose that, “I look more like my mom than my dad” saying since children may started looking completely different than their entire family.
Another thing that might happen is parents are going to want their kids to look the best and pick looks that will ensure they can become actors and models trying to make money off of their child’s looks before they are even born. This will lead to more body issues in the future generations. If all you are seeing are these genetically edited babies and you weren’t there are going to be body issues in that person.
Right now genetically edited human embryo’s and then implanting them is illegal. A doctor in China named Dr. He Jiankui has just edited an implanted embryo which led to the birth of twins. The only difference in these babies were they did not get their genes edited for look proposes, but because their father is HIV positive. Dr. Jiankui used a new gene-editing took named Crispr-ca9 to edit the genes. He was able to successfully change the genetic make-up of the babies to ensure they were not born HIV positive. This is leading people to believe that gene picking is not far behind it.
